Personality
The Schipperke is curious and loves to be involved in whatever is going on around them. A faithful watchdog, they will bark often (especially at strangers) if not taught otherwise. They can be happy in an apartment or a house with a large yard, but should by kept on a leash when not in a fenced area. Obedience classes are a good idea for the Schipperke.
Origin
The Schipperke was bred down in size from the Leauvenaar, a black sheep dog. The breed originated in the Flemish region of Belgium where it earned its named. “Schip” is the Flemish word meaning boat, as they were common watchdogs and ratters on the river barges in the region. “Little Captain” is another common nickname for the breed.
