The Shih Tzu is an affectionate, playful and intelligent dog. They love children and other pets if introduced from an early age, but they can be wary of strangers. They enjoy learning and are eager to please, but they can be stubborn at times. With their dignified attitude, they can give the impression that some tasks are beneath them. Patience and consistency can help them become relatively obedient.

Shih Tzus are believed to come from Tibet, where they lived in temples and were occasionally given as gifts to the emperors of China. In China, they were crossed with the Pekinese to become the breed we recognize today.
